Casper Golf Course: Links Course

Casper Golf Course Links Course Review 5458

Located in central Wyoming and built in 1997, the Links Course is the newest addition of Caper GC’s 27 holes golf complex.  Misleadingly labeled “Links” nearly half the holes have minimal links characteristics and significant elevation changes making the layout more of a highland or hill style.  The course also contains two of the most ill-conceived holes ever played, diminishing the overall experience of the Links Course and making it the least compelling of the layouts found at Casper GC.

Practice Area

Driving Range
Casper offers a three tiered mostly all grass driving range with a maximum range of just over 300 yards.  Since the range faces into the prevailing wind practice or warm-up sessions consistently have to deal with the area’s disruptive winds.  Nonetheless the range has good targets for aiming and antelope are often found wandering through the range.

Putting Green
A moderately sized putting green is located on the north side of the clubhouse and is able to accommodate multiple golfers.  The green conditions are fairly representational of conditions found on the course, but less than ideal for extended practice sessions.

The Course

Design & Layout
The newest addition to the City of Casper’s main golf course, the Links Course is an ill-named, ill-conceived, and least compelling addition to what would otherwise be a Continue reading

Rochelle Ranch Golf Course Review

Rochelle Ranch Golf Course Review 68

Deemed the 29th most difficult golf course in America by Golf Digest, Rochelle Ranch is a sprawling 18 hole public course along Interstate 80 in southern Wyoming.  Weaving through the rocky prairie brush the course challenges golfers to not only conquer its length (nearly 8000 yards from the tips) but also the strong westerly winds that are a constant presence…sometimes reaching 60+ mph.  A unique and memorable experience for anyone living or passing through the area.

Douglas Community Golf Club Review

Douglas Golf Club Wyoming Review IMG_6153

Located along I-25 in central Wyoming is the quiet public/community 18 hole course of Douglas Golf Club.  With a design emanating from and around the hill the clubhouse sits on, the course has a short and tempting layout.  Varying slopes and elevation changes offer up mild risks but great rewards for aggressive play amidst fairways lined with mid-to-fully developed trees. Playing conditions are typically average for a public course and Douglas overall a pleasant golfing experience.

Driving Range
Located on the east side of the hilltop parking lot on a downward slope is Douglas’ driving range.  Limited in distance to 280 yards with a 60 foot drop off, the open and wide range is only ideal for golfers with a top end range of around 240 yards. That said effective warm ups and short range practice sessions can be had.

Putting Greens
To the west side of Pro Shop are both of Douglas’ putting greens and practice bunker.  Each is representative of the conditions found on the course with the northern green being more ideal for extended practice sessions.

Glenrock Golf Club Review

Glenrock Golf Club Wyoming Review IMG_7517

A short 20 mile drive east of Casper, WY is the small but memorable 9 hole golf course of Glenrock.  Full of character and challenges the course weaves through the area’s natural rolling prairie hills and hollows.  The result is a golf course that simplistically embraces it’s surroundings while providing the golfer with a short yet sneak test of their golf skills.

Wheatland Golf Club Review

Located north of Cheyenne, Wyoming on Interstate 25 is the Wheatland Golf Club, a short 9 hole gem of a course in the middle of farm/ranch land. Wheatland offers mature trees, a simple but brilliantly conceived design, and shaved grass surrounding the greens that is reminiscent of Augusta National itself.  Well maintained for a public course, only the slow speeds of the greens detract from Wheatland being a destination course in the Cowboy State.

Practice Area

Wheatland offers a narrow all grass driving range to the east of the clubhouse on the down slope of a small hill.  A mere 250 yards in length the range is adequate only for medium to shorter strikers of the ball and only the most basic of shot shaping practices.

The small putting green located near the first tee fails to represent the conditions of slope and speed found on the course. In fact as of the summer of 2012 the poor condition of the green makes it rather useless for any type of practice or warm up.

The Course

Although originally built in 1931, Wheatland’s present 9 holes were Continue reading
